Spooky midwinter fog, pervasive this year.
2004 End-of-year Wrapup
Mr. Shavor mailed me a camera I'd left in his care since December (or so I *thought*). In any case, the camera came with some good (and not so good) stuff and it brought to mind the fair lack of updates post-Vico, so here 'tis...

Sacramento and the Delta in the wintertime, photos of Shavor's holiday party.

October 2004 (representing June-Dec, 2004) -- Camino Venadillo
I generally end the year with a up-beat presentation of winter photos, loose change -- stuff like that. Unfortunately the camera that has all that stuff is down in Walnut Creek, victim of a horrendously-ending (for me, in any regard) Holiday party that required no small amount crew to get me home alive.

In any regard, these photos are also a little out of cronological sequence but I'll put them here near the end which is kinf of appropriate since these photos are supposed to be more of a "what am I up to" than anything and it seems a good window of time to share these.

The fam moved from the childhood estate in late December and had been planning to for some time. My mother launched the idea of a move about the time my dad went into the hospital and rolling through until the end of the year, ensnaring my brother and myself in countless under-appreciated hours toiling around the house.

On one such occasion I thought that perhaps it might be my last time ever being there, I off to Italia for a month right as the house had gone on the market could easily come back to find it sold, out of escrow and into the family past.

Instead "we're moving" would drag through two more holidays that were thankfully not ruined with "we're moving" sentiment. Too much work for that, I suppose.

In any regard, a lot of buildup to explain why the house, why certain elements are therefore highlighted, etc.

Oct-Nov -- Italia!
Hilary and I go back to Italy to live in a Villa for a month with Roy, Cheryl, The Becks, the Twins and a whole cast of regular characters. At 260-some-odd photos, the largest of the photo sets to date, but what else do you do with 1700 photos?
11 September 2004 -- Aunt Phyllis's 80th Birthday
On my way out I wanted to say to the birthday girl "see you on your 85th" but didn't. Not because I don't think she'll make it that far, just because I hope I see all those Gibson folks sooner than that.

Any event liker this is an excuse for a family gathering and nobody puts them on better than the group of cousins that includes my father. I'm one of the elder second cousins or cousins one removed or some damned thing.

Here, unless we are "uncle", "aunt", "mom", "dad" or some kind of grampa, we're all some sort of cousin, aren't we?

Happy Birthday, Aunt Phyll

6 September 2004 -- Chalk It Up!
Labor day seemed later this year but there was still plenty of heat to be had downtown at the annual Chalk It Up festivities. Once again I collect way too many photos and find that distilling them down presents me with the same problems as taking the damned things in the first place: art is so subjective, what stays? What goes?

Fortunately I was able to keep it to two pages.

August/September 2004 -- The State Fair
Somehow it is inescapable that the State Fair will be The Place To Be In Sacramento at least two times while it is in town. Perhaps this is a broad social commentary on Sacramento or perhaps my own misguided interests. I always go once just to go to the fair, once for the demolition derby and once (again) for some third event.

Next year I'll have to get the wristband or ID or whatever. Prove that I am a TRUE fair dork.

In any regards, while I do not appear to have any photos of my cousin's performance at the State Fair, I do have demolition derby, sheeps, goats, fish, the state of the state fair under Der Gubernator, pigs, the MADD car and other amazements and amusements.

Step right this way.

11-14 August 2004 -- Almanor
Time to get the hell off the rat race and get my ass out into the sunshine.

James gets the summer gold star award for organizing our first family trip to Almanor in a couple of years. Molly and Hilary joined us as travel companions on a tent-camping adventure recalling the trips of yore, just without the massive support vehicle backing us up.

The verdict? Good times, though the lack of one's own "pooper" cast a dim shadow on a trip much longer than ours, at least in tents. Next year: cabins?

31 July - 1 August 2004 -- Dennis & Maureen Cabin Trip
Dennis and Mo decided to add a little adventure to their lives and get themselves a charming condo up in Incline Villiage. They were nice enough to invite ourselves and the Gribbles up to join them for the weekend and we managed to keep it action-packed. Team Gross/Gribble headed off for a day's kayaking whilst Hilary and myself headed for the nearby mecca of Ponderosa Ranch which -- GASP -- will be closing on my birthday this year, Sunday 26 September. Even though I've only been there once, its kind of sad to see the place go. It was just a goof for me and Hils, but it really did mean something to people who were there on both sides of the experience.

Later Saturday evening we went to Sand Point to see the Shakespeare Festival there. Kind of an interesting crowd, a lot of active, outdoorsy Tahoe types -- not suprising since they'd obviously turned down an evening at the tables to be here. A fun time and definately worth the extra rental price for the chairs.

Sunday we all-grouped to hike up the hill to see Diamond Peak without any snow. While I've driven by shuttered ski resorts dozens of times, I'd never really gotten up and into them so much. I really enjoy modern ghost town kind of places and this certainly qualified.

All in all an excellent weekend and excellent company with which to share it.

24 July 2004 -- Lambtown USA
Lambtown! I brought no one but my faithful companion Hilary, we went into the Heart of Darkness alone and yet found it changed. Somehow the downtown Dixon event found itself all gentrified! What happened to our beloved event? Would the (patent pending) potato peeler be there? Lamb Taco Crunch?

Would there even be enough hootchies to sponsor different categories this year? Where has Dixon gone, Joe Dimaggio?

04 July 2004 -- 4th of July Spec-tac-u-lar!
Goodness me, but quite a few people managed to make it by for this year's fete: Gregs x 2, Moores x 4, Sams x 2, Lolo, Raj, The Shumakers, The Piper-Pells, The Bryans, The Dawes & Chelle, Tim, Phil, Dan, Greg Hoban's date Myata, my good friend Brendan, Kiley, Erin, Ruby and James & Molly all made for a wonderful afternoon and evening. Everybody looked good, the food was excellent and the three-way fireworks were best-ever. Big thanks to everyone who came out and made the day.
June 2004 -- Summertime, wish living was easy
Summer kicked off with my dad being hospitalized, not exactly how you want to be spending you summer vacation, not exactly. Its been that kind of summer for a few of my friends, bittersweet. Good times are where you find them, however, and they were still to be found with friends and down at Secret Spot.
There she is, yo -- the Jeremiah O'Brien
06 June 2004 -- Riding Aboard the Jeremiah O'Brien
About a month before I saw this small add in the Chronicle that read "JEREMIAH O'BRIEN -- BAY CRUISE" and thought "Wow, that'd be a thing to do." I mentioned it to Hilary and we were on our way.
25 April 2004 -- The Bunker @ Mather
The military up and left Mather and all its facilities. By and large the old base has been absorbed by other things -- most of the original base center has been converted into offices with some buildings being demolished to make way for new ones. The old base housing has been converted into a housing development.

Still, some old relics from the base's past remain. On the way back from the vernal pools hike we spotted one and decided to go back to take a look...

25 April 2004 -- Vernal Pools
Hilary had gone with "The Aventure Club" to see the vernal pools out in Mather a few years before and it seemed like an interesting thing to go and see. Perhaps it was our particular docent and her time-of-life, but now that I know they are out there I am much more likely to go solo rather than with a tour group and all the fun that creates...
17 April 2004 -- Raj's 50th
Raj turned 50 and Lori hosted a wonderful schwingding at the august gentleman's house. I was under rather strict instructions to get photos for Raj's mom and, typically, I was more about the drink than the photography.

17 April 2004 --Peepoff 8
I wouldn't have gone to the peepoff this year save for the fact that Smith was getting married this year in pre-event nuptuals. I'd missed the year before and somehow the aging hipsters going through the motions this year didn't do it for me...

08-10 April 2004 -- C-Ranch
Well, orf we went to visit the Bryans at the Faw house in jolly old Sea Ranch. We were in the same general neighborhood as before, which was cool because it meant that (A) we knew where the seals were from there and (B) didn't much need to go see the seals. Good times, good eats, etc...
7 March 2004 -- The Twins First Birthday
So, like, do I update this thing anymore? Not much -- clearly we're in a state of photo decline here.

The babies are always getting older and finally reached the anniversary of their birth. Baby birthdays are alien to me. This is I think the only other baby birthday I've ever been to. Baby birthdays aren't like big people birthdays -- all the people looking for adult interaction hide out in the kitchen and sip discretely from plastic cups.

Dad Beck suggested that we were at "activity" time to which I thought, "SHIT! Should'a brought bocce balls!"

Jan-Feb 2004 -- Wintaire
Now is the winter of our marginal contentment.

Cats, food, winter at Secret Spot and Hank's birthday, all rolled into one.

7 Feb 2004 - Chinese New Year
So, like, not any updates here for a while. You know how it goes. Christmas, a million cards, a half-million CDs to go into cards, a radio project, a cookbook project, upgrades on two systems. After a while, all those easy projects you "used to" do fall by the wayside.

Really, these photos don't do the parade or the day any justice. Great weather, good parade, sadly bad angles and lighting for getting much online...

Pop! Pop!
