Florentine Hari Krishnas: I suppose you could see Hari Krishnas anyplace in the world, but there's something special about seeing them out and about in Florence. Seems like it would be a fertile place to recruit as well

Recorded on: 11-06-2004
Length: 11 seconds
Recorded at: Florence
...
Dancing Bugs: Short clip of "Dancing Bugs" sold by street vendors across Europe. Apparently the trick is that they are attached by wire to the boom box's tape drive motor.

Recorded on: 11-06-2004
Length: 2 seconds
Recorded at: Florence
...
The World's Most Patient Cat: This cat was ready to spring on pigeons for the -longest- time. I was hoping to catch it when it went for them but it never did

Recorded on: 11-05-2004
Length: 14 seconds
Recorded at: Assisi, Umbria

Nathan bangin' around: Nathan slams the villa's cupboard and struggles to balance cup, himeself in a fine display of newtonian physics

...
English C-ck: Well, okay, its a rooster.

Recorded on: 10-28-2004
Length: 7 seconds
Recorded at: Chatworth House, Darbyshire, England
...
Montalcino: Church bells: One of my favorite things about Italy is the bell schedule there. I'd say its a "call to worship" but I think someone said its something about daily prayers. One before work, one midday around pausa, one at the end of the workday. Nice. Anyways, here's and end-of-the-day set from Montalcino -- time to go home!

Recorded on: 10-24-2004
Length: 17 seconds
Recorded at: Montalcino, Tuscany
...
Panorama: Volterra: Pretty nice hilside towns in Tuscany, man. Just forget you are in the home of a major, heavy-duty prison and you're fine? Wanna do some shopping?

Recorded on: 10-21-2004
Length: 6 seconds
Recorded at: Volterra
...
Panorama: Piazza Anfiteatro (Lucca): This Piazza was built around the remains of an old Roman Amphitheater -- you can see the outlines nearly perfectly still.

Recorded on: 10-19-2004
Length: 11 seconds

...
Panorama: Florence American Cemetary: If you want to see the toll of WWII writ large, here it is. These are war dead from battles mostly after the fall of Rome from the area north of that city.

Recorded on: 10-18-2004
Length: 21 seconds
Recorded at: Tuscany
...
Florence: Scooter Mayhem: So, scooters are really big in Florence. When the light goes red they'll pack in up at the front and scoot off before the four-wheel traffic gets moving. This was heading to the Fiorentia v. Sienna match -- a pretty big game

Recorded on: 10-17-2004
Length: 14 seconds
Recorded at: Florence
...
Panorama: San Gimignano: Oh, such a sight on top of that venerable old town. In this panorama, as it pans right, look for the large area of rain pouring down. Its pouring down on our villa in Vico D'elsa. My clothes are "drying" there.

Recorded on: 10-14-2004
Length: 10 seconds
Recorded at: San Gimignano, Tuscany
...
Panorama: San Gimignano #2: Looking the opposite direction from the other one. Bonus: most of my travel group!

Length: 28 seconds
Recorded at: San Gimignano, Tuscany
...
The Certaldo Funicular: Oh yes, you know the song: Funicule, Funicula, Funicular aha ah ah aha. Anyways, it was the first time I'd ever been on this particular mode of transport and, indeed, the first such I'd ever seen. Wild, man!

Recorded on: 10-10-2004
Length: 28 seconds
Recorded at: Certaldo Alto, Tuscany

Camino Venadillo: Last Trip Down The Stairs: My folks' backyard was built upon a hillside. To give them some parity with the neighbors across the street, each of us on the western side got a short alotment of uphill property. Often times we'd go up here as kids to fool around -- a really nice place to get away from it all. I hadn't been up here in years and this was probably the last time I went down these stairs.

Recorded on: 10-02-2004

Recorded at: Camino Venadillo, San Ramon, CA
...
Camino Venadillo: Background Panoramic 1: Well, the folks done sold the ranch back in 2004 -- our childhood home is now someone elses. Kind of hard to take, you know? I decided I'd get some lively momentoes to take with me.

State Fair: Demolition Derby: Hilary and I always end up going at least twice to the State Fair: once to see the fair and once to catch some event like this here demolition derby. Oh, how I'd love to compete...

Recorded on: 09-05-2004
Length: 28 seconds
Recorded at: California State Fair, Sacramento, CA
...
California State Fair: VR Gone Wild: As far as I know this was the only time I've seen this booth. It was kind of a hokey VR world as such go, but it moved kind of fluidly and the people outside the fantasy world sure acted weird. Yes, that was me being yelled at towards the end of this clip and it was in jest. I think.

Recorded on: 09-05-2004

State Fair: Continued Demolition Derby Excitement: RRRRRRrrrr!

State Fair: Vintage Farm Equipment Display: 2004 was the last year the State Fair dedicated a large chunk of land to ag machinery. You can see the plot in the middle of this panorama where they used to drive the big tractors around a couple of times a day and boy was THAT neat! Nothing gets my blood humming like the sounds of those old steam boilers chugging away

The Ponderosa Ranch: Rope Tricks 2: Oh, this trick has a name, of course, but do I know it? No. Other than stepping into and out of your lassoo, this is the grandest of the rope tricks.

Recorded on: 07-31-2004
Length: 22 seconds
Recorded at: The Ponderosa, Incline Villiage, NV
...
The Ponderosa Ranch: Rope Tricks 1: Well, the Ponderosa was a great place to visit and sadly I only did so as it was about to close. A neat old tourist trap of the highest order. Guy here does old-school rope tricks including "rope the bandit" on a grade-schooler

Recorded on: 07-31-2004
Length: 28 seconds
Recorded at: The Ponderosa, Incline Villiage, NV

Jeremiah O'Brien: Engine Room: The blueprints for the liberty ships date back to the 19th or early 20th century: a boilerplate steam ship, not particularly elegant but got the job done in a mass-produced, quick-need world. Heck, sounds like my daily grind! Anyhow, if you've seen the movie "Titanic", you've seen these guys going around before.

Recorded on: 06-06-2004
Length: 10 seconds
Recorded at: San Francisco, CA
...
Jeremiah O'Brien: Mustang Strafing Run: Now, its one thing to have a vintage plane to fly around in. Something else altogether to have a vintage ship in the harbor to pretend to sink. If you watch the angle on this guy you can see he's not going for a beauty shot. The trio of pilots subsequently flew over to the Ghost Fleet and practiced sinking a few of them too.

Recorded on: 06-06-2004

Jeremiah O'Brien: Checkin' the lube: Ever wonder how you check the lubrication on a century-old technology? By hand, of course!

Length: 20 seconds
Recorded at: SS Jeremia O'Brien, San Francisco, CA
...
Jeremiah O'Brien: The Ghostly Wheel: Operations were being run on this outing from the outside deck but you wouldn't think the two wheels would be linked! Spooky! Also: "I AM GOING TO RUN THIS ------ SHIP AROUND, DANGIT! STOP WRESTLING ME!"

Recorded on: 06-06-2004
Length: 6 seconds
Recorded at: San Francisco, CA
...
Peep Off: Uber-Whoredom: I felt the annual Sacramento Peep-Off jumped the shark in 2004. No further evidence needs to be found than in this shot of Archbishop Dave Smith prepping his interview with the only sanctioned documentary crew there. Also there: a indie chick with some kind of tape setup and shotgun mike. When NPR setups show, its time to go.

Recorded on: 04-17-2004
Length: 4 seconds
Recorded at: Midtown, Sacramento, CA
...
Sea Ranch: Sheep Zen: Well, there's something both historically as well as environmentally correct about having sheep do your grass control up in a former oceanside ranch. Still, this does not diminish the surreality of coming across several hundred penned-in sheep in the fog.

Recorded on: 04-10-2004
Length: 17 seconds
Recorded at: Sea Ranch, CA

SF Chinese New Year 2004: Lion Dancers: Man, I love Chinese parades. So much fun. The best part are always the Lion Dancers. Even at my advanced age I find myself in occasional moments of suspended disbelief as they go past.

Recorded on: 02-07-2004
Length: 14 seconds
Recorded at: San Francisco, CA
...
SF Chinese New Year 2004: Dragon!: My love for the lions is not abated by my love of parade dragons, which I find not entirely as cool as the lions since they've got to follow the enchanted ball and therefore are not quite as prone to leaping up in displays of prowess or anything. Still, its the "money shot"
